PREMISE
You remember happening upon something terrible and nauseating: maybe it was viscera, if you're squeamish, falling off of a building if heights frighten you--or perhaps you're the type who hates to lose, and you've finally met your match? But when you open your eyes, it is gone--as is the place you last were. Instead, you find yourself in a dark, dusty room, with a small wooden talisman around your neck.
The only light you can see is through your window; a bonfire is burning in the distance.
>Investigate?
Seven Vices is an invite-only, short-term murder mystery game, influenced by the Fatal Frame and When They Cry series. Characters are trapped within the abandoned village Lebensbaum, and will struggle to survive while uncovering the town's past and their reasons for being there. Canon familiarity nor experience with murdergames is not necessary! Credit where credit is due, many of these mechanics were lifted from good ol'
murdermanor
1) Your character can, and likely will, die. Please come into the game keeping this in mind. There will be pieces of the plot for the dead characters to continue investigating with, but once they're dead, they're dead--there is no next day respawning.
2) Characters will be depowered to a minimum of 20% their original capabilities. This means no immortality, god-modding, info-modding, and blowing buildings up. They will, however, be able to keep lesser abilities or heavily dampened versions of the above-mentioned.
3) Secrecy is the key! Please keep your roles, plot details, and any other information that could be considered a spoiler to yourself. It makes things more fun, trust us.
4) The game will be soft capped at 30 characters, and hard capped at 4 per canon.
5) Activity is a requirement. A bunch of people idling does not a fun murdergame make, as this will be a fast-paced game.
6) While it's obvious that murdergames contain, well, murder, this game may end up especially violent due to its plot and horror themes. We will take individual squicks into account while plotting out the deaths, but this is a precaution that possibly squicky things will happen (see mechanics below for more info on this).
Every Monday, RNG will be used to determine victims and culprits. You may opt out of a death roll once, by providing sufficient activity: three threads with different characters, with at least 10 comments from you.
Once all parties have agreed, a tailored motive will go up on Tuesday to spur IC action. Although the mods will be present during plotting to oversee things and answer questions, the brunt of the murder planning will be up to the players in question.
Investigations & Trials
Dieday, Dieday, gotta get down on Dieday. On Friday evening (roughly 8PM CST, give or take a little), a body announcement post will go up. It will be up to the characters to find the victim(s) and nearby evidence. Specific clue lists will not go up, but rest assured that we'll make sure all clues necessary to solving the case are found before the trial begins. We don't want anyone running around blindly!
The trial will be posted on Saturday evening, break, and then resume and conclude on Sunday. During this, your NPC hostess will be available to answer questions and give clarification. The players will be ushered into the chapel, presented with a list of suspects, and all clues found by players will be shared. Players will be given time to discuss the clues, determine how the murder took place, and make their case for which of the suspects is the culprit.
Once players are sure of their vote, they will enter the confessional booth and select one of the culprits. Unless you are listed among the suspects, there is no way to vote for yourself or abstain. Someone who attempts not to vote will be trapped in the chapel until their vote is cast; if the deadline passes, they will be trapped there and left to starve. Regardless of innocence, the suspect with the most votes will be executed.
If the killer is caught, they will be executed. If an innocent suspect is scapegoated, the killer will retire from the game and be designated an Overseer.
Incentives & Motives
Lebensbaum is very obviously a town full of death, despair, and all that good stuff. Not so good for the characters is the effect this will have on their mental states. Under the town's influence, characters will be any degree of subtly-to-flat out paranoid, inclined towards violence, and have periods of blacking out completely. This influence will be a part of culprit motives; deaths are likely to be messy as a result.
At the end of each trial, a list of 3 "key players" will be presented based on a combination of trial activity, shenanigan factor, and/or RNG. These 3 will be given immunity for the week in the form of their talismans being blessed (being taken out of the death roll pool, OOCly). What this means is that any violent attacks on their person will be mysteriously repelled. Overseers are permanently slotted in the "key player" category.
Seven Deadly Sins
As the name implies, a big theme of this game will be the oft-referenced cardinal vices. On your app, you'll be asked to pick which of the seven fits your character the best, and they will be slotted for their duration in the game. The true function of this mechanic will remain a mystery until the characters discover it ICly.
Basically, it means we'd like to keep things limited to friends and friends-of-friends. If you saw an advertisement via plurk, just list the poster as your referral on your app.
How big will this game be? Is there a character limit?
The game will be soft-capped at 30 characters. What this means is that if we get end up getting 33 or so applications, we'll still accept them all. The canon limit is 4 characters per series, and each player may only app 1 character total.
Due to the game's content, is there a character age limit in place?
Not strictly, no. Teenagers and kids are fine, as long as you're fine with subjecting them to a complete bloodbath. Very young children/toddlers will likely have us ask you to pick a different character, though.
What sort of characters can I app?
Any kind you want! Canon characters, OCs, AUs (fanmade or otherwise), previous game history, whatever you wish. For the latter types, we'll just ask your app to be a little more detailed, as we probably don't have a convenient wiki to look at.
What's the day ratio here?
1:1, the game will take place in realtime.
When will the game start, and how long will it last?
Applications will open on February 1st, and the opening log will be posted on February 7th. Our goal is around 12 weeks, so it will likely run from now until the end of April/beginning of May.
What happens if I need to drop?
We'll ask that you try to avoid doing this, if possible. There are mechanics in place to account for dropped characters, but it will still negatively affect the atmosphere of a closed-circle, short-term game like this. However, if this is due to unforeseen circumstances, such as RL complications, or you simply need to be gone a single week/a few days during trials, just let us know. We're willing to work with you, and this system isn't implemented as a punishment!
What are the activity requirements?
There's no activity check set in stone, but being active will help your character in getting weekly immunity, as well as giving you the opportunity to pass on a death roll. All characters will be required to vote at trials, and anyone who doesn't without letting us know in advance will have their character killed off as per IC mechanics.
How can I contact the mods?
Send a PM to this account, a private plurk to
vicedirector, or
hakurei directly.

Generally speaking, will characters arrive with any items from home? Normal weapons, trinkets, animal sidekicks, etc? Or will these things have to be obtained through bonuses?

If this isn't acceptable, out of curiosity for general precedent, is just a bike acceptable? (I'm probably going to pick something else totally different instead of just a bike though.)
